Computer Networks Security: A Multilevel Approach

In many ways we used to worry less about our information being used improperly. Decades ago when most information was transferred and saved on paper, there was less threat of it being misused or tampered with simply because fewer people had access to it. These days, when everything is done and stored on computers there is an opportunity for hackers to access information stored on computer without, as in years past, having to go where a hardcopy exists.

Protecting computer networks from such attacks is of utmost importance as a lot of damage can be done to individuals as well as companies and corporations when a good computer networks security system is not in place. Technology for providing this protection continues to improve, but unfortunately so do the methods of retrieving confidential or personal information by malicious programs and hackers.

Every computer network has set provisions made in the infrastructure as well as policies in place to protect the network and resources that are accessible by it from being accessed by unauthorized people or programs. This is done in a number of different ways to counteract the different threats posed to computer networks security.

Network security is the term usually used to refer to measures taken to protect a network from invasion by hackers or other intruders. This is usually done at the borders of an organization, simply to prevent attack from the outside. Information security is the term used when it comes to protecting from malware attacks or even harmful mistakes within the organization and is often done by compartmentalizing the larger network organization with inner boundaries.

The first step in computer security network is to identify and verify the user. This is done most often with a one factor authentication of providing a username and password. Other layers can provide significantly more security such as using a security token, like an ATM card or cell phone. With three factor authentication part of yourself is also used such as your fingerprint or an eye scan.

When the user is authenticated, firewall is used to keep users from accessing services that are off limits. On top of this, it is necessary to have anti-virus or intrusion prevention software (IPS) to protect against malware such as worms, Trojan horses, viruses, spyware, adware, etc.

Because there are many different ways a computer network can be attacked it is necessary to have multiple layers of security in place to keep information shared and used within the network safe. Also, because malware is constantly being improved and changed, it is necessary to regularly update any security software you have.

Computer networks have to constantly monitor and measure the effectiveness of the computer networks security to be sure that it is up to date and that no holes appear in the system that can be taken advantage of by hackers, who will happily slide right through and snatch whatever information they can to wreak havoc on people and companies.
