Computer Security Tools That Fight The Threats
It can be difficult to know that something is threatening you but not being sure how to deal with it. Like in the movies when the woman knows there is someone in her apartment. She senses it, but she doesn’t know where they are or how they got in, much less what they plan to do to her! Terrifying!
That sense of helplessness can also apply to your computer security. Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration. Or maybe not so slight. There is probably less suspense in your feelings about your computer’s well being, but you are, or should be, aware that there is a threat. There always is.
The problem lies in not knowing how to handle that threat and keep it at bay. Because many of us really don’t know or understand much about computers it can seem overwhelming to figure out how to protect them. I mean, we hardly understand what it is they even need protecting from! Still, it has to be done. And fortunately, it can be done quite simply!
There are many different computer security tools available to you. Many of these you can even get online for free. Of course, while this is, in some ways very helpful, it also poses a new problem: Which one to choose. We are back to square one. When you don’t understand computers it’s hard to know what you need to use to protect yours.
First of all, you need to know that there is no simple answer in the first place. It is important that you have layers of security, because the threats to your computer are many and varied and new ones are created every day. You need to have more than just one type of software to protect your computer.
The first computer security product you need is a firewall. This is something that makes it so that users can only access what they are supposed to. Untrustworthy users are filtered out and denied entrance. This is basic in every type of network.
On top of firewall you need good antivirus software to protect against not only viruses but worms, Trojan horses and other malware that can cause damage. You should also have separate anti-spyware software.
Knowing which to choose can be difficult. There are free versions available as well as the kind you can purchase with varying prices. Talk to someone who knows about computers and they can help you determine what kind of protection will be right for you and your computer.
Online you can find good information and tips on what might be right for you, too. You can read reviews to get an idea of how effective the computer security tool you are considering has been for those who have used it in the past.
Keep in mind that while threats to your computer seem much less frightening than threats to your life, if someone has access to your personal information they can really mess up your life, or even find out where you live and create even more serious problems.
